Rights NGOs, Families Conference Condemns Military Death Sentences for Political Prisoners

Relatives of detainees sentenced to death by military courts in case 325 Kafr El-Sheikh and Case 174 Helwan held a conference Wednesday at the National Group headquarters in Cairo, where they stressed authorities must stop executions of their loved ones, and demanded re-trials before civilian courts.

The conference was attended by many journalists and representatives of human rights organizations. Families spoke about the absurd details of the two cases, the violations, torture and atrocities suffered by their loved ones, and details of the trials that issued intensely-politicized vindictive sentences against their relatives.

Earlier, military junta judges – in the Kafr el-Sheikh 325 case – sentenced to death 7 civilian political detainees, while in Helwan 174 case, they sentenced to death 7 more civilian detainees. Human rights organizations rejected these sentences and demanded a retrial of the accused before a civilian judiciary as stipulated by law.
