The Muslim Brotherhood mourns Mohamed Mahdi Akef, the group's seventh Chairman, who passed in the harsh dungeons of the ruthless military coup junta in Egypt after a long struggle with illness behind bars.

He was uniquely steadfast in the face of repeated attempts to discourage him from rejecting the traitorous 2013 military coup that ousted Egypt's first elected president. Although Akef's body was being ravaged by various illnesses, the junta banned him all visits by members of his family – including his children. He was almost 90 years of age.

Akef was born on July 12, 1928, the same year the Muslim Brotherhood was founded, and was a reformist leader and a great worker for Islam under the banner of the Muslim Brotherhood. He was also a prisoner through all ages of injustice and tyranny in Egypt, from the era of King Farouk to the era of the treasonous 2013 coup.

He was a truly remarkable, inspiring example of steadfastness, grace and resilience despite the horrors of torture that he suffered. Indeed, in president Nasser's dungeons, wardens thought he died, under torture, yet they could not extract a single word of support for the repressive regime at the time.

Akef was one of the leaders of the anti-occupation student movement. He is one of the most prominent leaders of resistance to the occupation on the banks of the Suez Canal, as witnessed by the cities of the Canal and the campsites of Egyptian universities. He had a shining history and a tremendous track record of persistent endeavors for the liberation of his country.

Akef was schooled in the Muslim Brotherhood for 77 years (1940 - 2017), close to its founder, Imam Hassan Al-Banna, then the six chairmen who preceded him, and later the eighth chairman, Dr Mohamed Badie.

Today, his gentle spirit passed, leaving the banner of truth, justice and freedom hovering high in the sky, to new generations, looking forward to a good reward from Almighty God.
