The Land Center for Human Rights (LCHR) is holding a workshop on October 7th, 2006, in cairo entitled “Can Rural Areas be Reformed Under the Current Policies of the Egyptian Government?”

During the past few weeks and under the following up of the international and regional changes, there have been some debates about a possible constitutional amendment and talks about political, economic and social reform that the country will witness in the upcoming period.

The National Democratic Party (NDP) has presented a number of initiatives in its conference held in September 2006 about the political and economic change that will happen in Egypt.

Many of the political and democratic forces don’t think that what the National Party is doing is for the favor of the people or support their economic, social and civil rights.

Others think that these initiatives are just a preparation phase for the coronation of Gamal Mubarak in the next presidential elections.

In this context, the LCHR is holding a workshop to spotlight the truth about what is happening in Egypt and its relation with the role of the civil society in supporting human rights in the countryside. Members of national associations, civil society organizations and farmer activists will take part in this workshop to crystallize a program that can improve the conditions of human rights and support the issues and demands of both male and female farmers through debates and working groups. The workshop will also show the role of the international funding organizations in supporting and reinforcing farmers issues in the Egyptian countryside.

The LCHR hopes that this workshop will contribute in reinforcing joint work among rural and civil society organizations to support citizens rights to a freedom and decent living.
