Egypt: Heshmat’s Case May Go Before International Court

Ten months have passed since the Egyptian parliamentary elections in 2005, and the Egyptian court hasn’t yet issued its ruling on the vote rigging and other election irregularities. Cases of 7 constituencies which witnessed widespread voting irregularities are still in court. In addition to challenges by candidates who are considered winners in the election, according to vote counting processes, but the election was rigged in favor of government’s candidates.


One of those winners- turned- losers is former MP Dr. Gamal Heshmat who stated to Ikhwanweb that he will sue the government before an international judiciary if the Egyptian court fails to rule in the case of voting irregularies which have been confirmed by many, including the testimony of Counselor Noha el Zeini and testimonies of judges who monitored the election process, as well as civil society agencies.


Heshmat added that the court has issued rulings in several similar cases for other candidates “ The court summoned me in May to hear my depositions on the 2005 elections and I submitted all the documents related to the case including a memo from the Judges Club and testimonies of judges monitoring the election”, he said. Heshmat threatened to go to an international court if he doesn’t get his rights through Egyptian court.” Now that I sense the absence of justice, I will consider this step but only after I ask the opinion of law experts and after I take permission from the MB Executive Bureau and the MB Chairman”, he added.
