More than two thousands demonstrated in three towns of Assiut Governorate in southern Egypt, after Friday prayers on August 4, 2006, in solidarity with the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine and to condemn the Israeli massacres. Police, according to Muslim Brotherhood spokesman in Assiut Mohammed Kamal, who related an account of what happened in Assiut the capital of the governorate. He asserted that the security forces beat the demonstrators and tried to close the mosque so that they didn’t take to streets, but under the pressure of the masses and the presence of women in the demonstrations, the security forces succumbed and allowed the demonstrators to stage their protests. However, the security forces arrested a number of protestors from each town where demonstrations took place, taking the number of the detainees to 130 persons. Kamal said the security agencies had earlier refused to let any activities in Assiut emerge in support of the resistance although they knew for sure that the demonstrations were peaceful ones. Strangely enough, 105 out of the 130 ones arrested were from protests led by Members of Parliament. Dr.Mohammed Kamal condemned what he depicted security suppressive measures, saying that the security agencies always ban the pro- resistance demonstrations under the pretext of the so called orders from above, but in fact they only aim to obstruct the people from showing their support to the resistance, which showed clearly in all activities organized for this event.

The Muslim Brotherhood had earlier few days ago distributed thousands of handouts bearing the title” The Faithful Pledge and the Eliminated Illusion”, in which the group called on the Arab governments to open the door before the masses to join the resistance in Lebanon or in Palestine, something which is far fetched at least for the time being.
