Brotherhood Joins Efforts to Draft New Constitution

The Muslim Brotherhood’s members Essam Al-Erian and Ali Fatah el-Bab participate in the committee formed to draft a new constitution to replace that of 1971. Sponsored by the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR), the Constitutional Forum held a number of meetings to reach a formula that meets the aspirations of Egyptians. Recently, the forum decided to set up a committee to draft the new constitution.   
 
After being accomplished, the constitution draft will be proposed to the forum to approve it. Being publicized in a massive conference, attended by representatives of syndicates, parties, civil society, and popular movements, will be the second step. Finally, it will be referred to both the president and the parliament.
 
The committee consists of professors of constitutional law and political science, judges, and some members of the parliament, among them fomer Prime Minister Dr. Aziz Sedqy, Prof. Yahya el-Gamal, a professor of constitutional law at Cairo University, Judge Ahmed Maky, the vice-president of the Cassation Court, and Mr. Mahmud Abazah, parliament member.
