Ayyad: The Best Positive Solution for Darfur is Political Solution
Ikhwanweb had this statement from Mr. Ayyad Mohamed Al-Leila Abdurrahman, the chief of Political Bureau in Sudan, in which he commented on the final resolution
number (1769) taken by the UN Security Council last Tuesday(July, 31, 2007).
The UN Security Council resolution is authorizing the deployment of a hybrid African Union-UN force to Darfur, besides using and spreading a 26,000-strong force to the country"s war-torn and famine-stricken region.
Mr. Ayyad Mohamed Al-Leila Abdurrahman said, “We are about to declare a formal statement concerning our opinion and concerns about the resolution.”
“First, the UN has clarified her decision to the United States. However, we may have, on the long-term basis, some concerns as the resolution may be dangerous on Sudan. Darfur is an isolated region; and that’s why we have our concerns about this point.”
He added, “However, we totally respect the government’s acceptance to that revolution. We also accept the UN terms on Darfur. The last resolution, number (1706) had some unfair terms, and was not accepted. But the recent resolution (1769) is a bit more acceptable.”
“ For example, the resolution number(1706) has taken many of the Sudan citizens rights, as its terms were approving taking citizens and trying them outside their countries, also one of the terms has approved that even in “Lahai” Court, all citizens should be tried in that court except American citizens.”
He added, “ I don’t believe that resolution (number 1706) was accepted or preferred by any Sudanese citizen. It was also criticized and rejected by the Sudanese government. The Sudanese government also rejected the interfering of UN Troops in general. However, the UN Security Council recent resolution ( number 1769) was accepted by the Sudanese President, he may have retreated a little to accept that resolution, but anyway, he, the National government, and all of us accept that resolution as an attempt to reach the best solution for the Darfur crisis. ”
When asked whether the UN troops “the joint forces” is the best solution for the Darfur crisis, Ayyad said, “Certainly the best positive solution for such long-term crisis is the political solution. Darfur’s rebel groups should meet with the Sudanese government and negotiate in order to reach the roots of the problem, and therefore reach an effective solution.”
“The essential reason for the existence of UN Troops is to protect civilians and keep security all around the region. They are peacekeeping troops, and therefore, the problem should better be solved nationally through negotiation in order to stop the rebel groups peacefully.” Mr. Ayyad said.
Mr. Ayyad said about their vision for the end of Darfur’s crisis, “We believe that the solution can be purely Sudanese, and through national negotiations only. But anyway, this resolution is much more fair than the one preceding it.”
It’s worth mentioning that Mr. Rodolphe Adada, Head of the UN-AU hybrid mission, has said in a statement to the BBC that the force would be one of "two legs for finding peace in Darfur" saying, "I"m sure it will be one of the main tools for forwarding peace in Darfur, but it"s only a peace operation, you need to have peace to keep… This is why the political meeting is of the essence."
At the end, ikhwanweb wish Darfur’s crisis would reach an end soon, and peace would prevail all over the world .
