Court clears the way for first MB Shura Council member-elect
The Court of Administrative Justice in Kafr el Sheikh, northern Egypt, held invalid the nomination of National Democratic Party (NDP) Hoda Tablway, after a background check revealed a prior three year sentencing for issuing a bounced check, which is a crime punished by jail time under Egyptian law. The nomination of Mrs. Tablway would violate Egyptian election laws, which require that candidates running for legislative offices must not have any criminal history.
The court order, if upheld by the government, would clear the way for the Muslim Brotherhood’s alternative and only remaining candidate in the district, Dr. Mohamed Wahba, to win the seat uncontested. The primary MB candidate for the district, Engineer Osama el Hussini, is facing a lawsuit himself filed by Mrs. Tablway accusing him of running a campaign using the religious slogan “Islam is the Solution” in violation of election laws, according to the lawsuit, which will be decided by a higher court.
