Darrag: Al-Shater Not Eligible for Freedom and Justice Party Chairmanship Candidacy
Dr. Amr Darrag, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee at the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), rejected as baseless news that Khairat Al-Shater, Muslim Brotherhood Deputy Chairman, is to run for FJP chair post.
Dr. Darrag pointed that Al-Shater is not a member of the FJP’s General Assembly, and therefore is not eligible to contest the chairmanship elections, according to the party rules of procedure.
He stressed that the FJP is completely independent of the Muslim Brotherhood in all matters and affairs pertaining to nomination and candidacy for the party leadership elections.
In a telephone interview with the Al-Mehwar satellite TV channel’s program "Sabahak Andena" (Your morning with us), Darrag said that FJP members have 10 days in which they can apply to run for the leadership of the party. Then the names of the candidates for the post of party chairman will be announced.
Talking about another subject, Darrag pointed that the Constituent Assembly (CA) tasked with writing Egypt’s new national charter will announce next week the start of the major popular campaign titled ‘Know Your Constitution’, which will allow all Egyptians a first reading of the articles of the new Constitution, so they can express their views and offer suggestions on the articles of the new document.
Darrag affirmed that the CA has finished 90% of the articles of the new Constitution, stressing that there is no dispute over anything except certain basic and simple issues, “it is expected to resolve all discussions this week”.
