Dr. Omaima Kamel: New Constitution Will Safeguard Women’s Rights in Full
During an interview Thursday evening on the satellite TV channel ‘Al-Jazeera Live, Egypt’, Dr. Omaima Kamel, member of the Constituent Assembly tasked with drafting Egypt’s new Constitution, affirmed that: "We are working hard to write a Constitution that will protect the dignity of all citizens, especially in the chapter on women’s rights. We are also working to ensure the right of women to work and representation in important positions in the state.
"The previous permanent constitution had texts that guaranteed women’s right to representation. But we never saw these effectively applied on the ground."
She further added, "My personal vision for a guarantee of women’s rights is that it would come from adequate education and enlightenment. Because an educated woman who has an enlightened opinion that can contribute to meeting challenges and solving issues on the scene, can claim her rights – by virtue of her education, culture and intellect – and not just through texts in the country’s Constitution".
