Egypt: Judges May Consider International Court

The Judges’ Club is examining the idea of forming a legal and constitutional committee to study the recent government’s bill on constitutional amendments, with some of these amendments being seen by the judges as a threat to the judiciary independence. Sources said that this committee will voice its opinion on all the constitutional amendments, especially with polls conducted among constitution experts which showed that the coming amendments will give rein to the Executive Authority to have full sway over the Legislative and Judiciary ones. These sources also expected further deterioration of the judges’ relations with the government that they could consider sending their case to human rights agencies and other international organizations.

In an exclusive statement to Ikhwanweb, Chief Justice Mahmoud el Khodairy said that the judges will not backtrack from their demand of a more balanced judicial law to replace the one tailored by the government for further extension of state control over all establishments including judiciary.
