Egypt Freedom and Justice Party Hails Constitutional Poll

Dr. Essam El-Erian, Vice-Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), said Saturday the Egyptian people proved they did not fall in the grip of fear or hopelessness, despite the storms violently stirred by dubious dark forces in the past months.

Separately, Dr. Mohamed Gamal Heshmat, member of the FJP National Committee, stressed that the massive crowds that descended Saturday on polling stations to cast their ballots in the constitutional referendum is the most powerful proof yet of the Egyptian people’s political maturity and awareness of their rights and higher interests.

"The long queues seen in the media and the Supreme Elections Committee having to consider extending the vote period by another day due to heavy turnout, are a resounding response refuting elite accusations charging that the Egyptian people are illiterate, ignorant and have no perception of their own higher interests. Further, I condemn the fierce media campaign waged by businessmen affiliated with the despotic former regime, against the new constitution.

"The wheels of democracy in Egypt have started turning. No-one can stop it after today. The Egyptian people have acquired a high degree of political awareness."
