Egypt Upper House Will Discuss Judicial Authority Law; No Approval Without Judges’ Views

Taher Abdel-Mohsen, Legislative Committee Chairman at Shura Council (SC) and member of the Freedom and Justice Party, confirmed that the SC has called on the government, the Supreme Judicial Council and various judicial bodies to submit draft amendments to the Judicial Authority Law, "The SC is not in a feud with the judiciary as claimed by hostile media. The SC works to serve the public interest, including the judiciary’s own interest to achieve effective and prompt justice.

"There is no intention to cancel discussion of amendments to the law of judicial authority submitted by Wassat Party lawmakers, Dr. Safwat Abdel-Ghani and me personally. These proposed changes have been approved by the legislative committee. A report of these amendments as approved, in principle, will be sent to the SC’s plenary session. Later, details of these amendments will be discussed by the legislative committee. Eventually, one amended draft law will be sent to the SC’s plenary session, headed by house Speaker Ahmed Fahmi."

Abdel-Mohsen added, "If the SC approves the bill in the plenary session, it will refer it to the Supreme Judicial Council, for distribution to all judicial bodies, in order for them to submit their respective views and observations. After hearing recommendations and opinions of all judicial bodies and the Supreme Judicial Council, the bill will be returned to the SC to discuss these observations and start amending the draft law in line with these recommendations as well as opinions of SC members.

"As soon as the draft law is approved, in its final form, by the SC, it will be sent to President Morsi to ratify it and pass it as applicable law."
