Egyptian Parliament Statement Regarding Lawmaker Farid Ismail’s Death in Harsh Junta Prison
Egyptians were shocked today (Wednesday) at news of MP Farid Ismail’s death. He was the head of the Committee on Defense and National Security at Egypt’s parliament (The People’s Assembly) and member of the Constituent Committee and a member of the Freedom and Justice Party’s Executive Office. His death was the direct result of medical negligence and insufficient care – suffered by detainees generally, and especially opponents of the coup, in Egypt in prison.
The Egyptian Parliament places full responsibility on coup authorities for the death of parliamentarian Ismail and other inmates, and affirms that these crimes are not time-barred, and that each criminal complicit in these crimes will be held accountable for his crimes.
Cases of murder under torture and due to medical neglect in junta prisons have exceeded 255 people, since the military coup.
The Egyptian Parliament also calls on the international community to break the silence about the crimes of the bloody military coup in Egypt, and calls on human rights organizations to visit Egyptian prisons to see and document the violations and crimes against detainees there.
The pure blood of innocent victims of coup crimes will be a curse on the oppressors. The people’s Revolution will triumph, and the people shall regain their will and their freedom.
