Egypt’s Human Rights Record
At Democratic Arsenal, Michael Cohen criticizes U.S. President George W. Bush’s support of Egypt’s democracy during his recent trip to the Middle East. Cohen notes that Egypt has been accused of numerous human rights violations claims that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is undeserving of compliments on his reform efforts. “Instead of standing up foand r democracy we have undercut the region’s democracy activists and destroyed any credibility we might have on the issue.”
The European Union has a different perspective on Egypt’s political activity, as it passed a resolution condemning the country’s human rights record. The Egyptian government was disappointed by this resolution and threatened to cut ties with the EU.
