Erian: Our Hands Are Extended to Build and safeguard This Homeland
Dr. Essam El-Erian, Vice Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), urged General Ahmed Shafiq, the losing candidate in the run-off, to act honorably and come out to congratulate Dr. Mohamed Morsi, the real winner in the presidential election.
During an interview on Al-Jazeera TV news channel, Dr. Erian said, "We extend our hand, in peace and tolerance, to everyone", and added, addressing the losing General, "Our hands are stretched out to build and protect this homeland.
"The Supreme Presidential Elections Committee should not delay the announcement of the elections results, and to serve the country’s higher interests. The interests of the country now dictate that the winning candidate must be promptly declared President of the Republic. Also, the President must take his oath of office before the Parliament, which will help stabilize the situation in the political arena, and boost security, which would soon lead to progress and prosperity. Indeed, we are confident of Dr. Morsi’s victory. And they know it. So, why the delay?"
Dr. Erian added, "The parliament was elected by the will of the people, and the will of the people must be respected. On the other hand, the Constitutional Court ruling does not mean the dissolution of parliament. Therefore, we’re saying ‘We are in liberty square, until parliament returns’. The court’s ruling is limited to individual seats only. Parliament is quite capable of dealing with this decision".
