Erian: Palestine UN Observer Non-Member Status Historic Day Thanks to Arab Revolutions
Dr. Essam El-Erian, Vice-Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), hailed upgrading Palestine to an observer State at the United Nations, saying: “This is a historic day for Palestine and the Arabs. The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Palestinian request for UN membership as an Observer State, which secures its rights, and may lead to bringing war-criminals to justice through the International Criminal Court.
Erian said: "The Palestinians have regained the lead, thanks to the revolutions of the Arab people".
The UN General Assembly has accepted, with the approval of 138 countries, the membership of Palestine as a non-member observer State, making it the UN’s 194th member.
The vote comes after ??the Palestinian National Authority, led by President Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), submitted to the General Assembly a draft resolution that called for granting Palestine UN non-member observer State, which was endorsed by Hamas, on condition that the resolution is not attached to any waiver of Palestinian basic rights. Hamas further rejected any concession or retreat from the rights of the Palestinians.
