Erian: We Aspire to Real Freedom, Independent Egypt and Genuine Democratic Transition

Dr. Essam El-Erian, Vice Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), asserted that the corrupt former regime is desperately trying to get back in office, but the Egyptian people will not allow it.

Erian said that he and all Egyptians have a dream of real freedom, independent homeland and a peaceful democratic transition, and that the measure of this transformation is how efficient and fair the presidential elections are.

Further, Erian added that the elections must be expressive of the will of the Egyptian people, without interference or manipulation of voters’ choice and without the interference of political money and the corruption of political life.

"By this measure, if the elections represented the will of the people, everyone must accept the result. This is what we ask for. If people give us their trust and confidence in the presidential elections, just as they did in the recent parliamentary elections, we urge all political players to be with us, or to act with total integrity and honesty as the opposition. By contrast, withdrawal from political life is a very big mistake."

Erian added, "The prospect of victory for Shafiq is illogical and unrealistic. In a free and fair election, it is impossible for Shafiq to win. For one thing, he was the last Mubarak Prime Minister. He tried to save the old regime, against the revolution.

"Consequently, we are fighting for free and fair elections that reflect the true free will of the Egyptian people."
