Essam Wins in Nasser City

After prolonged delay and consultations regards Makram el-Deary, the final results of reelection in Nasser City was declared. Till the end of voting count, el-Deary, the Moslem Brotherhood nominee, led her competitor of the National Democratic Party, Mustafa el-Salab with margin of 1500 votes. Nevertheless, the declared outcome announced that el-Salab wins with margin of 510 votes.

According to the reelection result, Essam Mokhter, the MB nominee, comes in the first rank with 13420 votes, followed by the NDP candidate with 12010 votes, then comes el-Deary, the MB candidate in the third place with 11500 votes.

Political observers believed that the deliberate defeat of el-Deary has two dimensions; it is not suitable that the seats of the district, in which the president casts vote, go to the Moslem Brotherhood. The other dimension is political; it is meant to illustrate that the Moslem Brotherhood and Islamist movements, in general, adopt anti-women stance.

It is worth mentioning that el-Deary is the second female candidate of the Moslem Brotherhood who was subject to ballot-rigging. In 2000 election, Jehan el-Khalafoy, the MB nominee, has faced tough measures; her husband along with her inner circle has been detained, her home has been besieged, in addition she has lost election due to frauds.

Thus, the Moslem Brotherhood nominees in the east districts of Cairo win three seats in the run-off polls of the first phase of the parliamentary election.
