First Candidate for Egypt’s Presidency Submits His Papers

The first independent candidate for President in 2011 Lawyer Saeed Abaza, on Wednesday submitted two letters to the People’s Assembly and Shura Council, calling for a hearing on his election platform, to conduct a secret ballot vote whether or not to approve him.
Abaza called the two councils to show the result of the ballot on members who support his candidacy, so that he can submit them to the competent authorities when they open the door for candidacy in the presidential election. He maintained that he needs a quick response so that he can campaign if he meets the eligibility requirements.
The letters were based on Article 76 of the Egyptian Constitution which stipulates that Presidential candidates shall secure the support of 65 members of the People’s Assembly.
