FJP’s Rafiq Habib: Elections’ Results Sign of Healthy Political Diversity

Egypt’s historical parliamentary elections, witnessed crowds flocking to cast their votes and express their will. Preliminary results reveal that the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), is leading the polls; results from Egypt’s expatriates however have not been finalised.

Ikhwanweb, in an exclusive interview, with the party’s VP Copt intellect Dr. Rafiq Habib, discussed his vision regarding these results and their effect both in Egypt and abroad.

Ikhwanweb: How do you perceive the large turnout of the Egyptian people in the elections?

Habib: The Egyptian people have proven that they possess the true will to choose who will represent them and shape their future. They understand that the revolution’s demands will be achieved once true democracy is established.

Ikhwanweb: What are your thoughts regarding the election’s preliminary results?

Habib: The results reflect Egypt’s political landscape and competition among the numerous currents.

Ikhwanweb: What do you think of the FJP’s results so far?

Habib: The party has done well so far, although we might of have lost some of the conservative votes to Al Nour Party, but I am confident we will do better in the next two phases.

Ikhwanweb: How do you interpret the surfacing of new parties such as the Kotla Almasreya, Nour, and Wasat onto the political arena?

Habib: These parties illustrate the competitions between the numerous currents and a healthy sign of diversity in the community. For example, liberals were represented by Egyptian Bloc and al Wafd, while conservative parties included the FJP and Wasat as well as Salafist parties which succeeded in rallying other Salafists and showing good performance thus far

Ikhwanweb: Do you think the West will accept the result of the success of the Islamist parties during the elections?

Habib: The West is fully aware that Egypt is undergoing democracy and understands the significance of respecting the will of the people reflected in these elections.
