FJP Leader: Egypt Does Not Need New Constitutional Declaration
Regarding the principles governing the constitution and including them in a new constitutional declaration, Vice President of Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) Dr. Essam El-Erian stated, "I think that Egypt does not need a new constitutional declaration, and I do not think that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) will issue a new constitutional declaration because it is clear that such declaration must be received with a consensus from all political forces, and this is not verified till now," he said in an interview with Ikhwanweb.
El-Erian stressed the importance of the selection of the Constituent Assembly by the parliament. He said that this committee should include members from outside parliament and it should be representative of all sectors of society, writers, artists, thinkers, men and women and Muslims and Christians. He said it is not wise that legal experts monopolize the drafting of the Constitution.
El-Erian emphasized that ‘the Democratic Alliance for Egypt’, which comprises 26 political factions led by FJP and the liberal Wafd Party, will have a key role in political life in the next five or ten years.
"We have a consensus on many issues among the political forces of the Democratic Alliance, and we have sought to accomplish and document guarantees for the coalition. We have also worked to lay an essential perspective regarding the law of the People’s Assembly, and we are still determined to do that. We started at a meeting to agree on the standards for the composition of the Constituent Assembly, which will draft the new constitution through the elections of its members by the parliament," he added.
