FJP Statement No. 40, Last Elections Phase Ends with 50% Turnout

The first round of the last phase of the parliamentary elections ended following a large turnout of voters reaching 50% or more in some areas.

Taking the lead was the Wady Gedeed constituency with a 60% turnout followed by North Sinai with 50%. The Minia, Gharbeya, and Qalubeya governorates followed with an attendance ranging from 40-45%. The turnout in Qena and Matrouh was 30%.

The turnout indicated the Egyptians’ hunger for democracy and their perseverance to continue till their objectives are met after they freely expressed their will. The high turnout during the elections run with integrity may be regarded as the best outcome of the revolution which is nearing its first anniversary.

Despite this democratic experience, some violations by numerous candidates formerly affiliated with the dismembered NDP who ran independently in these elections were recorded. 

It is on this note that we call on the respective authorities in the HEC to tackle the problems so that they do not recur in the run-offs.  In the Minia, Qena and Daqahleya governorates especially instances were recorded of threats by former NDP members using weapons and guns preventing voters to cast their votes. Cases of fraud in some polling stations were also documented.
