FJP Youth: Reinstating of the Emergency Law a Step in the Wrong Direction
A large number of youth groups organised a massive demonstration in Beheira governorate Monday, protesting against decisions made by Egypt’s interim ruler the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) to activate emergency laws. The protesters demanded SCAF rescind a law that forbids strikes and sit-ins and to reopen Aljazeera’s satellite channel which was closed earlier following a raid on its offices in Cairo.
In a statement to Ikhwanweb, the Freedom and Justice Party youth representative, Sherif Heshmat, criticised the decision to revive the emergency law, saying “This decision is a shame on the new governing body and is a step back to the era of the ousted Mubarak. The decision must be immediately revoked as it defeats the purpose of the revolution whose core demands were dignity, human rights, and freedoms.”
Protesters chanted slogans rejecting the emergency law, the repealing of which was one of the revolution’s top demands. Youth movements which participated included the Freedom and Justice Party, Al Ghad Party, Justice Party, April 6th Movement, Egypt’s Coalition, Kefaya, Youth for change, in addition to a large number of citizens.
