For the 1st time in history Court of Cessation will examine appeal filed by Al Shater and his Companions today

 An appeal submitted by Eng. Khairat Al-Shater, the second deputy chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and 17 other leading MB leaders against the sentence which had been imposed on them by a courts-martial will be looked into today October 27. It is the first time an appeal of this kind is being looked into since it was issued by a military tribunal.

 

Abdel-Moneim Abdel-Maksoud, the prominent Muslim Brotherhood’s lawyer, has ascertained that “The defense has made dozens of memos to challenge the validity of the Military Court’s provisions concerning Al Shater and his companions in the wake of a drill displayed and  organized at Al-Azhar University by the Muslim Brotherhood students. It comes in the context of unfair trials which took place with disregard to the conventional judiciary set by the law and Constitution”.

 

 “The military tribunal did not comply with charters set by the UN convention, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) which stipulates military court rulings should not be derived from an independent judiciary”, Abdel-Maksoud said. He considered the method in which the court issued cruel and unjust sentences a confirmation of the politicization of the cause revealing the ruling regime’s willingness to weaken the country’s largest opposing political power; that is the Muslim Brotherhood”.
