Ganayni Calls For MOJ Supervision Of Election Rosters
MB Parliamentary Bloc Member MP Zakariyyah El-Ganayni requested the Egyptian government to entrust the annual election roster revision procedures for the year 2008-2009 to the Ministry of Justice rather than the Interior.
In his statement to Ikhwanweb, El-Ganayni said that the tasks of the Ministry of Interior would be better off if they were limited to protecting the citizens and country from crimes as dictated to it by the constitution. El-Ganayni added that transparency would ensure this explaining that its purpose is not to challenge any authority as much as it aims at establishing justice and preventing the overlap of tasks.
It is mentioned that within all security divisions across the country”s governorates, the concerned committees in the police centers and stations, and governor headquarters assume their different tasks of recording, auditing, clearing election rosters from names of people who have passed away, and accepting applications for changing election districts according to legal guidelines. In addition, these committees carry out the procedures for automatic registration of citizens who have reached the age of 18 up to January 31, 2009 based on records obtained from the national ID databases.
The new registration process is expected to end on January 31, 2009 and the rosters will be shown to citizens in the different security divisions throughout the month of February. Also, applications for correcting the rosters begin on February 1, 2009 and end on March 15, 2009.
