Government Proposes Law to Amend current Presidential Election Criteria

Egypt’s cabinet has drafted a law which sets 2017 as deadline for minor parties in parliament to field presidential candidates. According to sources this implements a previously passed constitutional amendment; however analysts assert the change does not offer a real opening for Egyptian opposition parties, which have only around 1 percent representation in the assembly.
Under the new restrictive law, no opposition party holds the required representation level to field a candidate to challenge the National Democratic Party’s candidate again serving the ruling regimes conspiracy.
