Habib: Egyptian Regime Seeks To Sideline MB’s Political, Social Roles

Dr. Mohamed Habib, the deputy chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), confirmed that the number of MB detainees reached 668 detainees, including the group referred to a military tribunal, Shura Council candidates and others whom the Egyptian government has threw behind bars on groundless claims .
 
Asked whether it is of any use for the Muslim Brotherhood to press ahead with the Shura Council elections, Dr. Habib said in a statement to Ikhwanweb that they arrest MB members and Shura Council candidates for now and release them later to arrest another group and so on. They aim through these detentions at hindering the Muslim Brotherhood”s achievements in the Egyptian street and to prevent MB candidates from winning the Shura Council elections. Habib confirmed that the Egyptian street shows its full solidarity with the Muslim Brotherhood in a way that proves a high sense of awareness and understanding of the real causes of the current tensions between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Egyptian regime .
 
Commenting on the current tensions between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Egyptian government, Habib said that the regime does not want to hear the voice of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Egyptian regime has been targeting the group years ago in order to sideline its role in the Egyptian political life. The latest spark was our landslide win in 2005 legislative elections as we grabbed 88 seats, a big figure given the harassments we faced during these elections. Add to this Hamas” win in the latest Palestinian legislative elections scared the Egyptian regime which started to to adopt chaotic campaigns in order to instigate the public opinion against the Muslim Brotherhood.
 
The regime used government vetted media outlets to defame the group in addition to harassments, detentions, freezing assets and referral to incompetent military tribunals on groundless charges. The regime even tailored constitutional amendments in order to undermine the Muslim Brotherhood and to close any method through which the moderate group can serve the Egyptians. All these actions and measures are carried out to prevent the Muslim Brotherhood from doing its political and social roles.
