Halawani: MB Teachers’ Sit-in To Safeguard Success of Democratic Experience

 Muslim Brotherhood (MB) teachers and their supporters in recent elections continued to occupy the Teachers’ Syndicate headquarters in Cairo and a number of other governorates to put pressure on the current union board to hand over union committees to the winners of the elections.

 
Dr. Ahmed Halawani, MB teachers administrator, stated that: "The remnants of the defunct National Party, who controlled the teachers’ unions throughout the long years of the previous regime do not respect the law nor the democratic experience that produced a new board, elected by the majority of teachers under the supervision of the Egyptian judiciary."

In a statement to IkhwanWeb, he said: "Remnants of the National Party fear that, once they hand over the union, the file on financial irregularities in the teachers’ unions will be opened."

Dr. Halawani added that MB teachers resorted to sit-ins to safeguard free elections and to maintain the success of the democratic experience that prevailed throughout the Egyptian homeland and also to protect and preserve the rights of teachers.

The MB teachers administrator said: “We have exhausted all avenues to claim those rights, after extensive attempts that went in vain, with the governors, the military rulers in the governorates, the Council of Ministers and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), to hand over the teachers’ union headquarters and all files to the winners in the elections."

Dr. Halawani revealed that some sub-unions controlled by the remnants of the defunct National Party have been handed over to the winners in the teachers’ elections in governorates such as Beheira, Sharqyia, Dakahlia Fayoum and Beni Suef, while others are still refusing to hand over union property: Sohaj, Suez, Alexandria and Cairo, for example.
