Hayya warns of new closure of Rafah crossing

MP Dr. Khalil Al-Hayya, one of the Hamas leaders in the Gaza Strip, has warned of any new closure of the Rafah crossing between the Strip and Egypt.

He said in a press release on Tuesday that Hamas was waiting for the Egyptian answer to Hamas”s proposal in this regard, adding that his Movement does not mind a role for PA chief Mahmoud Abbas in running the affairs of the terminal in coordination with the caretaker government of Ismail Haneyya.

“We categorically reject, however, any Zionist presence or supervision, whether publicly or covertly”, he elaborated.

For his part, Dr. Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, criticized the Egyptian security elements for using live bullets against Palestinians on the Rafah border crossing on Monday, which killed one and wounded tens others.

He hoped that the efforts exerted by Hamas and Egyptian officials would succeed in preventing a repeat of such “regrettable” events.

Abu Zuhri told Quds Press that part of the Egyptian media was launching a campaign against Gaza, the Palestinian people and Hamas in a bid to downplay the popular Arab and Islamic anger over the siege imposed on Gaza.
