Heshmat: Current Crisis Calls for Dialogue, Not Confrontation and Escalation
Dr. Gamal Heshmat, member of the National Committee of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), said that the way out of the current crisis is for everyone to realize that the President’s Constitutional Declaration aimed to protect State institutions.
Dr. Heshmat further pointed that the constitution is not a holy book, but a document that a fifth of the People’s Assembly (lower house of Egyptian parliament) members can amend it. He stressed that for political decisions, dialogue is the only way forward.
“I am baffled at Egyptian opposition political forces’ response to the president’s decrees, their stubborn refusal to start dialogue until the President cancels the recent constitutional declaration, and the threats they make of civil disobedience, ‘last warning’, ‘red card Friday’ and ‘ultimatum Friday’ – all of which are calls for escalation and confrontation, not to dialogue.
