Hisham Mubarak Law Center Criticizes Releasing Lawyers on Bail, Sparing Police Officers

In a statement to Ikhwanweb, Kahled Ali  (lawyer and activist at Hisham Mubarak Law Center) expressed his astonishment at the decision passed by West Cairo Prosecution Wednesday to release all lawyers accused of assaulting police officers at Hadayeq Al-Qubba police station on financial bail that ranges from 500 to 1000 EGP while releasing the officers who were accused of assaulting the lawyer without bail.

Four lawyers, including Tareq Al-Awadi member of the Freedoms Committee at the Bar Association, Magdy Taha, Adel Sayed Abdrabu, and Muhammad Abdu Hailqan, have been arrested on Tuesday and charged with storming into the police station, assaulting judicial arrest personnel, and offending them while performing their job.

Lawyers have refuted these charges and accused the officers of assaulting, shackling, and jailing the lawyer while performing his legal profession. Prosecution listened to the lawyers and their advocates for almost six hours.

On Tuesday, there has been a sit-in organized by 300 lawyers before Hadaeq Al-Qubba’s police station after the assault against their colleague lawyer Magdy Ibrahim Taha and injuring him severely in the face. But as a defense measure, officers said that lawyers have stormed into the police station and assaulted the officers, and not vice versa.
