In a Statement, MB Decides It Will Participate in July 29 Rally Against Supra-Constitutional Articles
During this birth process of democracy, the Egyptian people are hoping for a state of stability based on genuine democracy asserting the supremacy of the people and their right to write their own constitution and choosing their representatives and rulers. These are the basis for the renaissance of Egypt, social justice, freedom and independence of the judiciary.
The Egyptian people have spoken during the referendum last March, and everyone must comply with the will of the people. Yet, a few did not respect the popular will, and called for writing the constitution in their own way; in an attempt to manipulate and challenge the outcome of that referendum, specifically, choosing a constituent body that is to be elected by the parliament and become in charge of drafting the constitution, expressing the right of the people in having their own constitution.
The Constitution is to be made by the people, and then approved by the people, in a referendum. However, those who challenge this basic right began to develop the so called the "supra-constitutional articles", claiming that they have the approval of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), which caused suspicion and confusion among the public. Therefore, several national and political factions have called for a march on Friday, July 29, 2011; in order to preserve peoples’ rights, and rally around the results of the March 19th referendum.
The Muslim Brotherhood have decided its participation in the events on July 29, asking the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to publicly clarify its position regarding "the supra-constitutional articles", which violate its own Constitutional Declaration, as it poses an attempt to limit the popular will and restrict the constituent body.
There is no doubt that a declaration by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces rejecting the supra-constitutional articles and confirming the compliance with the will of the people and respecting the Constitution, will ease the situation, reassure the people and remove the confusion and tension.
The Muslim Brotherhood strongly rejects any suspicious attempts to drive a wedge between the people and its army, and it values the army’s role in protecting the revolution. Furthermore, the Muslim Brotherhood fully denounces any attempt to attack army headquarters and military police by handful of people whose motives are unclear. The MB Brotherhood warns of desperate attempts by the anti-revolution forces at home and abroad to abort the revolution and spread chaos and destruction in the country.
May Allah Almighty shelter Egypt from all conspiracies and evil, and guide the people of Egypt, civilians and military, to wisdom and righteousness, and unite their hearts together along the right path.
The Muslim Brotherhood
