In Turkey, Obama Addresses the Muslim World

Helene Cooper at the NY Times reports, “[i]n a wide-ranging speech before the Turkish Parliament in the capital, Ankara, Mr. Obama extended his campaign of outreach to the Muslim world, painting himself as a man who understands it and would seek to build a bridge between Islam and the West.”

Explaining that U.S. relations with Muslims would not be based solely on fighting al Qaeda, the president articulated that the United States “would never be at war with Islam” – a statement which Michael Allen notes “is certain to get huge play throughout the Arab world.” And Spencer Ackerman argued that this speech “shows that there is, in fact, a choice between domination and subservience, between perpetual war and dhimmitude: patient, respectful cooperation, and acting like great civilizations ought to act.”
