Ministry of the Interior Demands Arrest of 17 Leading Muslim Brotherhood Figures. Muslim Brothers Affirm: Calling for Reform Will Continue.

In continuation of the unjustified escalation against political forces opposing the Egyptian regime, led by the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), the Ministry of Interior has asked the State Security Prosecution to arrest and bring 17 leading figures in the MB, in an unparalleled precedent, in response to demonstrations that were staged in solidarity with judges during the trial of top judiciary counselors al-Bastaweesy and Makki.

Azbakiya Police Station Commissioner sent a list of the names to the Ministry of Interior which submitted the investigations record. The record stated the need to arrest 17 leading figures in the MB, ahead of whom are Dr. Gamal Hishmat, professor of medicine and a former member of parliament; Dr. Gamal Nassar, first secretary of the Deputy Chairman of the MB; Eng. Ali Abdel-Fattah, a leading MB figure in Alexandria; Mr. Gamal Tageddeen, member of the Board of Directors of the Lawyers’ Syndicate; in addition to 12 other prominent leaders.

The Ministry of the Interior openly accused those leaders of organizing marches, demonstrations and sit-ins in major streets on Thursday, 11 May 2006, in solidarity with judges, and of inviting people to take part in the marches the purpose of which is allegedly showing contempt for the Egyptian regime.
For his part, Dr. Mohamed Habib, First Deputy of the MB Chairman, in a special statement to Ikhwanweb, described that move as “a new message and an attempt by the regime to suppress the opposition and put an end to the state of political mobility that has been going on. This is a conduct that is incompatible with the most simple constitutional and legal norms and rules. It is also a notice brought to the attention of the entire world that the security in Egypt is unstable, which undoubtedly further complicates matters and intensifies the boiling and tense situation through which the Egyptian people is going right now.”

Mr. Ali Abdel-Fattah, a prominent leader in the MB in Alexandria and one of those included in the group to be arrested, said, “what happens now confirms that the security of the regime is given precedence over that of citizens and that any talk about a real democratic practice is just an empty talk. It also proves that any government reform is only a décor.”
Abdel-Fattah stressed that the current stage in Egypt shouldn’t intimidate us, through detentions, beatings or other methods resorted to by the regime to suppress the opposition. The reform march must continue so that we may not live many more years under a brutal dictatorial regime.”
