Dr. Hasan Azzam, director of fisheries in the ministry of agriculture, said that the boats which were fired on were small rowing boats which are used for fishing just off the seashore.
Azzam also said that last week there was another serious attack on Palestinian fishermen when Israeli occupation gunboats opened fire at a fishing boat owned by Omar al-Habil while fishing off the Rafah shore leading to the boat breaking in the sea. The boat and those on board were only saved by the quick response of other Palestinian fishing boats in the area.
He also stressed that such attacks are a daily occurrence by which the occupation aims to discourage Palestinian fishermen from carrying on with their business and to deny them their sole source of income.
The Israeli occupation has been gradually strangling the fishing industry in the Gaza Strip, first by decreasing the limits on Palestinian fishermen from 20 miles, to 12 miles and since 2006 to 6 miles. [see map].
