Junior Brotherhood Members Encouraged to Assume Leadership Roles

Junior Brotherhood Members Encouraged to Assume Leadership Roles

Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported that ’the Muslim Brotherhood’s Leader Mr. Muhammad Akef will not run for a second term as the MB chief. Dr. Mohamed Habib, the group’s deputy leader, denied such reports, stating this matter has not come up for internal discussion yet, although he indicated that some members of the group’s Guidance Bureau, the highest authority within the Brotherhood structure, made some relevant proposals.

Asking Mr. Mohamed Helal, whose words were cited in the report, he stated that Mr. Akef had voiced his desire not to run for a second term during a private meeting. Helal added that group’s bylaws give the MB chief the right to run for two successive terms. Mr. Helal also stated he himself will not run again for the membership of the Guidance Bureau and will call on the more than 70 other members to follow suit in order to give junior members the opportunity to take over the group’s leadership.
