Libya Muslim Brotherhood Statement on General Haftar’s Desperate Coup Attempt
Libya’s Muslim Brotherhood issued the following statement:
The Libyan Muslim Brotherhood is deeply concerned about recent developments and attempts to storm Benghazi, the symbol of the Revolution, as well as attacks targeting state institutions in the capital, Tripoli, and the consequent fall of many dead and wounded citizens.
We offer our deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, and we pray for full recovery for the wounded, and remind everyone of the sanctity of Muslim blood. God Almighty said: "Whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, to abide therein (forever): and the wrath and the curse of God are upon him, and a dreadful penalty is prepared for him" (Quran 4:93). Further, the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, said: "The murder of a believer – in the sight of God – is more abominable than the demise of the entire world".
Out of a great sense of Islamic and national duty, the Libyan Muslim Brotherhood stresses the following:
First: The ongoing upheaval and violence is nothing less of a new desperate coup attempt led by (former General) Khalifa Haftar, who has shunned legitimacy and is wanted by the law, along with dubious parties lusting after power, even over the dead bodies of innocent Libyans. We would remind all of them that the era of coups has gone, that nations are only built through consensus and dialogue, and that the political scene is only led by those favored by the Libyan people of their own free will.
Second: As we said many times in several previous statements, we must take solid practical steps to fasttrack the process of building the army and the police institutions and activate all security apparatus, especially in the city of Benghazi. We also must protect our brothers in the army and police force against killings and acts of treachery targeting them, taking all necessary action to apprehend criminals and perpetrators of such crimes and bring them to justice as soon as possible.
Third: We call on all revolutionaries to rally around the goals of the February 17 Revolution, and not to accept under any circumstances the return of any violations of Libyans’ human rights and dignity. We must all be united against those who callously shed the blood of Libyans, no matter what religious or tribal reasons they advertise. We call on all revolutionaries to abide by decisions issued by legitimate institutions of the state and to quickly respond to any decision inviting them to join the state’s military and security institutions.
Fourth: We urge all Libyans not to be distracted by calls inciting discord stoked by dubious TV channels linked to local or foreign powers and individuals working hard to thwart any democratic experience in countries of the Arab Spring. We call on competent authorities to take necessary legal action against these TV channels and media outlets which clearly aim to vilify and demonize the February Revolution.
Fifth: We call upon all legitimate parties represented in the government to shoulder their responsibilities seriously and endeavor to address the sharp deterioration of security in Libya, especially in Benghazi. It certainly is not enough to make promises and wishes. We ask them to take concrete steps that citizens can feel and see in their daily life.
In conclusion, we call on the good people of this beloved homeland, especially tribal elders and dignitaries, scholars, preachers and national elites, to make every effort in order to stop the fighting, stop the bloodshed, maintain social peace and save citizens’ lives and property.
God said: "Hold fast, all of you united together… and be not divided among yourselves" (Quran 3:103).
God save Libya and its good people…
