MB – A Force to be Reckoned With

Describing the Muslim Brotherhood as a force to be reckoned with, Copt business tycoon Naguib Sawiris announced a plan to form a coalition to compete against the MB in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for September.

Addressing an audience Saturday, Sawiris asserted that four Egyptian political parties, including one formed by the billionaire would form a coalition. According to Sawiris the silent majority had to be worked with especially as the MB enjoyed much popularity on the street.

Evidence of this support was illustrated during a survey released last month by Pew Research Centre’s Global Attitudes Project which found that nearly 60 percent of Egyptians endorsed domestic laws to be based on Islamic references; a platform the MB has proposed where it calls for a civil state based on Islam

The MB founded in 1928 is renowned for its massive pro-active charity work and ability to mobilize support from the Egyptian communities prompting opposition to vie for supporters ahead of the elections.

The four parties interested in the alliance include the Democratic Front Party, the Justice Party and the Egyptian Social Democratic party in addition to Sawiris’ party.
