MB attend ElBaradei’s fruitful meeting with opposition trends.

In a statement to Ikhwanweb, Dr. Al-Katatni said that he attended the closed meeting, as the Brotherhood’s representative upon ElBaradei’s invitation. He asserted that the meeting was quite friendly and was attended by many of the political and intellectual elite of Egypt from across the political spectrum, discussing the internal affairs, political stalemate, dictatorship, the society’s economic and moral collapse and decline in services.

He pointed out that a number of representatives from opposition forces in Egypt agreed to form a “National Assembly for Change,” whose primary objective is to tackle political stalemate, repression and tyranny.  ElBaradei and Hassan Nafa’a, Professor and Head of the Political Science Department of Cairo University in consultation with activists and political forces were mandated to develop the general framework for the assembly. A later meeting will decide on the assemblies’ founders and constituents.

“The opposition adopted a balanced and cooperative approach in their meeting agreeing that there were obstacles which must be overcome before El-Baradei’s possible nomination for presidency”. Dr Al-Katatni added that “there was consensus about the possibility of a further political coalition to increase the strength, in order to confront the ruling regime” as confirmed to the AFP that “everyone agrees that no one can succeed alone and there must be a concerted effort”. The objective is that the political forces should agree to work through one platform reflecting a compromising view towards ending a 50 plus years of one-party rule in Egypt

Representatives from all opposition political forces in Egypt attended  the meeting, including Chancellor Mustafa al-Tawil, President Emeritus of the Wafd Party, al-Wafd Party leader Chancellor Said Al-Gamal, Jurist Dr. Yahya Jamal, Engineer Abul Ezz Al Hariri, a member of the leftist Tagammu Party, MP Hamdeen Sabahy, an independent MP Dr. Gamal Zahran, Dr. Ossama Ghazali Harb, President of the Democratic Front Party, Mamdouh Kenawi, President of the Liberal Constitutional Party, Dr. Ayman Nour, founder and leader of the al-Ghad Party and Journalist Mohammed Abdul Quddus, member of the Journalists Syndicate and Rapporteur of the civil Liberties Committee.
