MB Detainees 515, Mostly Under Provisional Detention

The number of Muslim Brotherhood detainees has reached, in the last period, up to 515 detainees, mostly under provisional detention. There has been a sharp increase in the sweeps of arrests during the last Shura Council elections during which Egyptian security forces staged a crackdown against the Egyptian moderate group to prevent it from winning any seat. The group didn’t win any seat due to these detentions and wide-scale riggings although it garnered 88 seats in 2005 legislative elections.

For his part, Abdul Moneim Abdul Maqsoud, the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) lawyer, said: the number of Mb detainees reached now to 515 detainees, including 147 detainees pending (33 of them are MB leaders pending a military case, topped by engineer Khairat Al-Shater the second deputy chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood) and 367 detained in the following prisons:
Torah farm prison: 86
Burj Al-Arab prison 297
Wadi Al-Natrun prison 65
Zagazig public prison 8
Mansoura public prison 31
Tanta prison 9
Suez prison 8
Mahkum prison in Torah 10 .

Abdul Maqsood added in a statement to Ikhwanweb that:” The detainees held under provisional detention are the biggest in number since 2005 elections, during which the number hit 700. he added that the number of detainees reached 1000 since the Muslim Brotherhood declared running latest Shura Council elections.

He said he hopes that all detainees be released, specially that there is no reason for holding them and they face no cases for which they are required to remain held.

The MB lawyer demanded Egyptian government to open a serious dialogue with Egyptian opposition in general, specially the Muslim Brotherhood and to deal with the MB file as a political, not a security, file.
