MB slams Bishop’s offensive remarks and calls on Muslims to remain calm
The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, called on the Church to respond to the offensive comments made by Bishop Bishoy, the secretary of the Holy Synod, who described Muslims as mere guests and to condemn the allegations he made concerning Christianity and the Holy Quran.
In a statement, the MB declared that the remarks fuel discrimination, extremism and misperception. They stressed that it would lead to polarization and fragmentation as well as dangerous unintended and unforeseen consequences. The MB called on their wise Christian brethren to speak up and slam the fanatic efforts to burn the bridges which have remained strong throughout the centuries between the Christians and Muslims in Egypt.
The statement added that such comments coincided with recent announcements made by extremists in the West, who have called for the torching of the Muslims’ holy Quran. The MB criticized the remarks made, asserting that it was imperative for the government to intervene and publicly condemn such remarks. They added that by remaining silent, it would not only be a wrongful omission but also a lack of truth and an act of injustice. The MB demanded the government and Al Azhar’s scholars to take a positive stance and practice their constitutional powers and legal rights by refuting the priest’s statements and dismiss and relieve him from his current position in which he was deemed unworthy of.
The MB concluded its statement by calling on Muslims to remain calm and not to give in to deliberate provocations aimed at fanning communal hatred and violence.
