Morsi: Selmi Amendments Postpone Constitution Drafting
Dr. Mohamed Morsi, Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) Chairman, and Mohamed Abdul Maqsoud, a Salafi leader, stated that the meeting which took place with Prime Minister Dr. Essam Sharaf and Deputy PM for Democratic Transition Dr. Ali Selmi discussed the final draft of the constitution.
They were surprised during their first meeting to find that SCAF had issued an amended document to the press without consensus. The constitutional declaration promulgated by SCAF mandating that two thirds of the newly elected parliament must agree to the selected assembly that will draft the constitution was considered impossible to abide by since it was difficult to reach such a majority. This would postpone the forming of a committee and in turn delay the constitution’s drafting which will pave the way for stability and the peaceful transition of power.
Morsi stated, “During an exchanged phone call, Selmi ascertained that the document was circulated accidentally. Selmi affirmed that the government was committed to the former clause agreed upon earlier and that the committee to draft the constitution should be chosen by the parliament and Shura members.”
Selmi called for the correction of the current text as soon as possible.
