MP has second thoughts on his request to discuss contaminated drinking water.

MP  Hosny Badawy, Head of the Housing Committee in the Shura Council, collected signatures to initiate  the discussing of  the contamination  of  drinking water and its impact on public’ health. However he was the first to defend the water’s quality in the Committee’s meeting in response to what was provided by MP Heshmat Abul Kheir on the water’s contamination in Upper Egypt. Abul Kheir asserted that these contaminations may cause many diseases such as renal failure and Schistosomiasis (also known as bilharzias). Bilharzias infection may occur when a person swims in the canal. However Badawy argued “We have visited Upper Egypt and villages there, and they are safer than the ones near the sea. We assure citizens that the water is fine, it might have simple elements which may be solved”.

His response came as a surprise since it was his call for the discussion of the water’s contamination in the areas located near the waterways which is mixed with sewage. The increase of iron and manganese in the wells are also a threat on the health of citizens. The committee called for the immediate implementation of drainage projects and drinking water nationwide to save the lives of citizens from possible diseases especially in Upper Egypt and the slums.
