Mubarak Oblivious to Opposition Outcries

During President Hosni Mubarak’s address to the newly-seated People’s Assembly on Sunday, the leader defended the policies of the ruling National Democratic Party and dismissed all the opposition’s outcries.

Amid the accusations of denied political rights and guarantees for reform, Mubarak focused on economic growth and reducing unemployment. He also dismissed the efforts of the "shadow parliament" created recently by former MPs from all walks and trends, including opposition figures from the Muslim Brotherhood, the Kefaya movement, the NAC and others.

Coptic leaders also voiced their dissent, accusing Mubarak of ignoring the reform demands of religious minorities. The Coptic leaders had hoped Mubarak would address their demands for legislation on places of worship and religious discrimination.
