Nazra for Feminist Studies: Egypt’s NDP Foils Women’s Quota and Captures Seats as a Result of Mass Fraud

Nazra for Feminist Studies, member in the Independent Coalition for Election Observation, released a special statement about women on Election Day to choose a Member of Parliament. The statement made some observations about candidates from the opposition parties and the Muslim Brotherhood on Election Day.

“Throughout the electoral process the Independent Coalition for Election Observation found irregularities starting from opening the door for nomination, the exclusion of female candidates, to non-compliance with court orders,” the statement added.

In comments to Ikhwanweb, executive director of the Nazra Association for Feminist Studies, Mozen Hassan, said: “The previous indicators raise a question about remarks of the government and its ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) on the mechanisms that allow for increasing the empowerment of women’s role in society and serious steps are being taken to bring political empowerment of women with a cultural, social, and political background. It is clear from the foregoing that the absence of female candidates from opposition parties that do not belong to the ruling NDP contributed to the failure in many opposition parties that have opposed it on the grounds that the ruling National Party will win more seats.”

He also said that it contributes to societal frustration concerning the woman’s role as a political actor, given the fact that the ruling party dominates the women’s seats which means the absence of another different political discourse.
