Olmert: Building security fence along borders with Egypt a necessity

An Israeli official quoted his premier Ehud Olmert as saying on Sunday that building a security fence along the borders with Egypt had become a necessity.

Olmert was speaking at the Israeli weekly cabinet session in which the ministers discussed the Gaza situation after the opening of several holes in its border with Egypt for 12 days. The Israeli government claimed that Palestinians managed to smuggle “advanced weapons” into the Strip during that period.

The proposed fence would extend for 250 kilometers from Eilat on the Red Sea to Karm Abu Salem at the Gaza Strip borders.

The head of the Israeli Shabak (general security) apparatus claimed during the session that Palestinian resistance factions smuggled big quantities of “combat means” into Gaza.

He also alleged that many resistance activists managed to return to Gaza.
