Opposition Groups Issue Statement Calling for Interior Minister’s Resignation

A statement was issued by political opposition and national groups calling for the resignation of Habib al-Adly, the Interior Minister.

The call, which came from groups with different ideologies but united in their call for Egypt’s unity, followed the bombing in Alexandria which claimed the lives of 23 people and injured close to 100.

Groups included are the Wafd and al-Ghad Party, the April 6 Youth Movement, the Revolutionary Socialists, and many others.  The statement called for unity in the face of the attacks and for sectarian violence to end.  The Egyptian government was directly blamed for the continued violence.

It slammed the extraordinary speed with which the authorities arrested and tried Muslims, denouncing the lack of security for Coptic locations on days leading up to the bombing. It indicated that this reveals that the ruling regime is not genuine in its statements of unity and solidarity.

According to the opposition groups, al-Adly has failed to show remorse for the bombing victims in his statements or actions since the attack.
