POMED director denies US meddling in Egypt’s affairs

In a recent statement POMED’s director Stephen McInerney, emphasized that it was imperative that the US continue to persuade Egypt to run transparent elections. He pointed to the significance of economic and military aid, diplomatic incentives and US investment in Egypt.

McInerney ascertained that the organization which focuses on strengthening the constituency for US policies which peacefully support democratic reform in the middle east dismissed the notion that the US was interfering in Egypt’s internal affairs by issuing calls for reform, since the Egyptian public itself supported such calls.

He claimed that if Egypt’s popular Muslim Brotherhood opposition group, did not secure seats in the upcoming parliamentary elections, it would be due to the fact that the Egyptian regimes policies had served to marginalize secular opposition parties.

McInerney maintained that the US did not support the presidential bequeathing to the President’s son, Gamal Mubarak, or former IAEA chief Dr Mohamed ElBaradei but rather supported the practice of conducting elections with integrity
