PRESS RELEASE: 14 Coup Opponents, Including MB Leadership Unjustly Sentenced to Death
The shocking yet unsurprising sentencing of Muslim Brotherhood Chairman Dr Mohamed Badie, Dr Mohamed Beltagy (general secretary of the Freedom and Justice party), Dr Bassem Ouda (former minister of supply and interior trade), Dr Safwat Hegazy (Islamic scholar), Dr Essam El-Erian (vice chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party), Assem Abdul-Magid (from Al-Jamia-el-Islamia) and eight others only serves to further expose the corrupt and craven nature of the coup authorities.
This untenable verdict was handed down by a supine judiciary which now seems to be nothing more than the junta’s puppets, with no independence or integrity to speak of.
Pertaining to the case known as the Istiqama Mosque Incident, this verdict was delivered on Thursday by Justice Mohamed Nagy Shehata from the Giza Court, following an unscheduled and incomplete trial which lacked even the basic semblance of due process.
No accounts were given by the so-called witnesses and further trials and sessions were yet to be held for this case.
Following the verdict’s announcement, all defendants announced they would continue to struggle to establish the January 25 (2011) Revolution goals, regardless of their fate.
Egyptians will persist with their peaceful protest movement until the coup is completely defeated.
They steadfastly refuse to allow farcical trials, unjust verdicts, illegal detention, torture crimes,or any other form of repression inflicted on them by coup authorities to erode their iron will and resilience.
The Egyptian people will continue their quest for freedom and justice. If anything, these injustices fuel the people’s resolve.
